Open House #2 / Public Hearing

Learn more about the project and provide feedback on Preferred Design Alternatives
and Draft Environmental Assessment findings.

The K-96 Improvements Project Team is excited to present Preferred Design Alternatives and draft Environmental Assessment findings for the corridor:

  • Upgrading the freeway between I-135 and I-35 interchanges
  • Expanding the highway from 4 to 6 lanes
  • Improving seven interchanges: Hillside, Oliver, Woodlawn, Rock, Webb, Greenwich, and 21st

The project will enhance safety, improve capacity, provide reliable travel times and relieve congestion to keep Kansans moving.

Design Alternatives & Environmental Impacts

On February 2, 2023, the K-96 Improvements Project team shared Preliminary Design Alternatives with the public at the first Community Open House. After incorporating feedback received at that event, along with numerous meetings with stakeholders and members of the community over the past year, the team has prepared Preferred Design Alternatives for the K-96 corridor.

Along with design efforts, an Environmental Assessment was conducted in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), to document potential project impacts on the human and natural environment.

This Environmental Assessment includes:

  • Review of existing and future land uses along the corridor
  • Identification of potential historical and archaeological sites
  • Survey of wetland and habitats along the creeks crossing the study area
  • Modeling to determine potential traffic noise impacts
  • Other social and natural environment analyses as necessary and appropriate

The findings of these studies are included in the project’s Draft Environmental Assessment.

As part of the NEPA process, a Public Hearing (Open House #2) was held on April 11, 2024 to share information about the Preferred Design Alternatives and Draft Environmental Assessment and to receive public feedback. This feedback is considered when making decisions on how to best plan, design, and construct the project.

All of the materials shown at the Public Hearing are available for review on this page.
